Alassane Souleymane, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Office des Produits Vivriers du Niger (OPVN), who has been held hostage by the al-Qaeda-linked Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin’ (JNIM) since January 11, has sent a message to Niger’s ruling military authorities, appealing for intervention to secure his release.

In a video statement, Souleymane confirmed his identity and captivity, stating that he was in good health but urged the Nigerien authorities to act swiftly to facilitate his return to his family.

“My name is Mr. Anassar Suleiman. I was born in 1964 in Karachi Sud, Tawa, Niger. Today is February 12, 2025. I have been held by the men of the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims since January 11, 2025. I am doing very, very well. I sincerely hope that the Nigerien authorities will intervene for my release so that I can quickly reunite with my family. Thank you,” he said.

There has been no official response from the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) regarding the video or any potential negotiations for Souleymane’s release.
