Former Senate Leader and Agba-Akin Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Teslim Kolawole Folarin, has congratulated the newly elected executive leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, led by its Chairman, Mr. Akeem Abass, on their victory at the just-concluded council election.

Senator Folarin described the emergence of the new team as “a reaffirmation of the trust and confidence reposed in them by practising journalists across Oyo State,” noting that the union occupies a strategic position in the deepening of democracy and the promotion of good governance.

According to the Senator, journalism remains a noble profession that requires integrity, courage, fairness, and ethical responsibility—qualities he expressed confidence the new NUJ leadership will uphold.

He said:

“I heartily congratulate Mr. Akeem Abass and all members of the newly elected Oyo State NUJ executive. Your election is a call to higher service. The media is the watchdog of society, and your roles in shaping public discourse, holding leaders accountable, and strengthening democratic norms cannot be overstated.”

The former Senate Leader urged the new leadership to prioritise professionalism, capacity development, ethical reportage, unity within the union, and constructive engagement with stakeholders. He emphasised that the public looks to journalists not only for information but for guidance, clarity, and truth—especially in times of political and socio-economic uncertainty.

“I charge the new NUJ executives to raise the bar of professionalism. Oyo NUJ has a proud history of producing some of Nigeria’s finest journalists. Build on this legacy. Promote fairness, accuracy, and objectivity in all media engagements. Strengthen internal cohesion and continue to defend the rights and welfare of journalists in the state.”

Senator Folarin reaffirmed his admiration for the critical role journalists play in nation-building and assured the union of his continued partnership and support in all efforts aimed at advancing responsible journalism and enhancing democratic growth.

He wished the new executives a successful and impactful tenure.
