The All Progressives Congress (APC) New Media Directorate vehemently condemns the recent statements made by Governor Godwin Obaseki, which have gone viral, where he threatened to “burn down Nigeria.” This irresponsible and incendiary rhetoric is unbecoming of any public official, let alone a governor who should be a paragon of peace and stability.

Governor Obaseki’s comments come in the wake of a violent incident on Thursday last week. Allegedly, thugs loyal to Governor Obaseki attacked the APC gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, upon his arrival in Benin City. This heinous act resulted in the tragic death of a police aide accompanying Senator Okpebholo and was, without doubt, an assassination attempt on the Senator’s life.

It is both alarming and tragic that Governor Obaseki, whose state vigilante security outfit is widely suspected of orchestrating this brutal attack, would escalate tensions further by making such reckless threats. This behavior is not only a grave moral failing but also a direct threat to the peace and security of Edo State and the entire nation.

We call on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate note of Governor Obaseki’s actions as a direct challenge to his leadership and a potential threat to national security. The President must act swiftly to address this dangerous rhetoric and ensure that justice is served for the attack on Senator Okpebholo.

Furthermore, we urge the Inspector General of Police to thoroughly investigate this incident and hold all responsible parties accountable. The use of violence and intimidation in politics is an affront to democracy and must be stamped out with the full force of the law.

To the people of Edo State, we implore you to remain vigilant and security-conscious during these trying times. Your safety is paramount, and it is essential to stay informed and cautious in the face of these threats.

Finally, we call on Governor Obaseki to reconsider his approach and prioritize the well-being of Edo State’s citizens. It is high time he allows the people of Edo State to breathe freely, without fear of violence and intimidation.
