Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Adijat Adeleye has appealed to members of the public to support the government in addressing cases of child abandonment in the State.

Mrs. Adeleye made the appeal today after she rescued a one day baby girl abandoned in a dustbin at Isale Abetu area of Abeokuta, the State capital.

According to her, she received a distress call at about 8 o’clock this Wednesday morning about a case of an abandoned child in a dustbin at Isale Abetu, besides lati Eleja, in the Abeokuta South local Government. Thereafter, a Social Worker was dispatched to the scene, but due to logistics issue, the Commissioner had to personally intervened by evacuating the baby girl to the State Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.

She said: “We had to dispatch our social worker to the area immediately I got the information. Unfortunately, because of some logistics issues, rh officer could not go and I had to go there myself to evacuate both the baby girl, who was abandoned in a dustbin and her mother to the hospital. At the moment they are in the hospital, being attended to.

“The first thing for us is for the safety of the child and the mother, that’s paramount to us, later we can look at the problem, why did she threw her child away, is she okay herself ?

“The child, only a day old, has been admitted to the Children’s Emergency Ward at the State Hospital Ijaye, for medical attention and close monitoring, while the mother, 25 year old Babatunde Jimoh Akande, Is also receiving medical attention. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the abandonment will commence once the mother and child’s safety is secured”, the Commissioner assured.

The husband, Jimoh Akande, claimed ignorance of his wife’s pregnancy, despite marrying her seven months ago.

While expressing gratitude to the state government and men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their support, the women Affairs Commissioner however called for additional vehicles to enhance the Ministry’s mobility to promptly and adequately respond to cases of abuses, violents, and neglects across the state.

She again called on good-hearted individuals and Corporate bodies to support the Ministry in the area of vehicles to enable it discharge its duties of safeguarding the lives of the vulnerable in the society.

“The state government has been so supportive and let me salute the support of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps. The governor is also supportive but then, government has a lot of work to do and that is why we will continue to appeal to good hearted people out there that we need more vehicle at the ministry.

” At times we received calls from far away areas in Ijebu, Yewa, and over the state to come and evacuate abused children, women, gender based violence persons. We are more than ready, we are more than committed to our job but mobility is what we need.” She submitted.
