Robert Prevost of the United States has been named the new Pope, the new head of the Catholic church.
The new pope Robert Prevost is the first American pontiff in history and will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
Prompt News had earlier reported that the traditional white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Thursday signalled that a decision had been reached, indicating the new pontiff secured the required two-thirds majority vote.
The conclave, which began on Wednesday, involved 133 cardinals from around the world.
It was convened after the passing of Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88.
