Former coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has stepped down from his role as coach of Benin Republic according to reports in the country.

Rohr successfully qualifed the team for the Africa Cup of Nations, but saw his team suffer a setback in the world cup qualifiers, when they threw away a two goal lead to draw 2-2 against Zimbabwe and also lost 0-2 to South Africa.

The disappointing results made the FA led by Mathurin de Chacus to summon an emergency meeting, where they expressed their displeasure with the poor results of the team, with the president addressing the press after the meeting. Rohr also spoke to the media after the meeting and voiced his unhappiness with the way, the FA handled issues surrounding results picked up in the world cup qualifiers.

“This is the first time I’ve met all the members of the Federation’s Executive Committee. The meeting went well. Just because you lose doesn’t mean you have to question everything”, he said.

Recent reports say Rohr decided to hand his resignation, and the FA has his assistant Moussa Latoundji lined up as his replacement with talks said to be progressing nicely.

A statement from the FA is expected on the future of the German, who has been in charge of the team for also two years after his sacking as coach of the senior national team of Nigeria in 2021.
